Great curling botehs — the ancestor of the paisley motif — parade across this ivory field in red, navy, green, gold and beige, gathering around dark rosette medallions in the manner of the classic Persian boteh carpets. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan in the 1970s from 100% natural wool, it measures 8.4 x 10.2 ft (256 x 310 cm), a true room-size antique. The teal-green borders, filled with ornamented lozenges and sprouting flowers, are almost a rug in themselves. Soft, durable and beautifully aged, it works as the statement piece in a living room or dining room — and paisley-design carpets in this size and condition do not appear often.
