Kilim vs. Pile Rug: What's the Difference and Which Is Right for Your Home?

The two great families of handmade rugs are kilims (flatwoven) and pile rugs (hand-knotted). They're made differently, they live differently in your home, and one of them is probably better for your room than the other. Here's how to choose.

How they're made

A kilim is woven like fabric: colored weft threads pass over and under the warp, creating a flat, reversible textile with no pile at all. A pile rug is knotted: the weaver ties thousands — often more than a million — of individual knots of wool onto the warp, then trims them to create the soft, velvety surface you sink your toes into.

Feel and warmth

Pile rugs win on softness and insulation. If the rug is going where you walk barefoot — bedroom, living room — pile feels luxurious. Kilims are firmer and lighter, closer to a heavy woven blanket underfoot.

Durability and cleaning

Both last for generations when made of good wool. Kilims have a practical advantage: most are fully reversible, so you can flip them and double their life. They're also lighter to lift, shake out, and move. Pile rugs hide dirt better between cleanings and handle very heavy foot traffic gracefully.

Style

Kilims tend toward bold, graphic, geometric patterns — perfect for boho, southwestern, Scandinavian and modern interiors. Pile rugs range from tribal geometry (like our Turkmen and Ersari rugs) to intricate floral designs, and they anchor a room with warmth and depth.

Price

Size for size, kilims are usually more affordable than hand-knotted pile rugs, because flatweaving is faster than tying knots one by one. That makes kilims a wonderful entry into genuine handmade rugs.

Our honest advice

  • High-traffic hallway or kitchen: kilim or a runner — light, tough, easy to clean. See our runners.
  • Living room where you want warmth and luxury: hand-knotted pile rug.
  • Walls, benches, layering: kilims — they hang beautifully and layer over larger neutral rugs.
